This weekend, August 9 and 10, the Golf del Sur Amateur Open was held at the Golf del Sur facilities, with a massive turnout.
The Amateur Open is part of Golf del Sur’s “Summer Series,” and this week enjoyed a highly competitive atmosphere. This is the second in this summer series, which will conclude with a children’s tournament on September 6.
Medal play was played on the white and red bars. More than 81 participants, with a long waiting list, took their first shots from the first and tenth tees.
In the men’s category, the player of the moment, Jaume Montalat, gave no chance to the illustrious Paco Cea and the young promise from Icod, Rodrigo Pérez, who came with an air of revenge after his great performance at the Montesdeoca Tournament.
Paco Cea declared, “It was a great competition, and I congratulate the Gof del Sur for the magnificent organization of these events. The music and all the details made the difference.” The Málaga native arrives at the Canary Islands Professional Championship with great enthusiasm, a serious contender for the title.
Jaume carded a 70 (-2) to win again. Nothing can stop Jaume these days. He was two strokes ahead of Paco Cea, who yesterday signed par for the course, and played at a high level. He dropped a few strokes along the way, but drawing on his experience, he was satisfied, as he is currently the professional runner-up. Cea, runner-up as a professional, relinquished his trophy and presented it to amateur Rodrigo Pérez, who led the second round. He couldn’t handle a great Montalat, who has already racked up many rounds under par in recent weeks. The Icodense player continues to train hard. “It was a great weekend, but we have to keep working to keep fighting for victories.” With exquisite poise, his father, Vicente, expressed his pride in his son’s efforts. They participated in both events of the series with great enthusiasm.
In the senior category, Alejandro Sans performed very well, taking the title with rounds of 78 and 80.
In the women’s category, Edurne Larihoy won by a wide margin over the second-placed player. Edurne put in a great performance on the first day with 73 and 82 on the second day. The second-placed scratch player was Lucía Saviron, a junior from Peñón.
In the handicap category, Luc Spyschaert won with -14, and professional basketball player Alex López took second place with -12. Alex, a born competitor, thanked Golf del Sur for putting him on the scene and didn’t stop there. He wants to continue improving and aspires to be on the Golf del Sur competition team.
Highlighting the children’s participation, who played the 18 holes with yellow bars over both days, were promising Miguel Galindo, Leo Calazancio, and Mark Kaydo, and the girls Lucía Saviron and Edurne herself, leading these youngsters, who put in a great performance.
If there was one thing that Aaron Galindo, General Manager, highlighted at the cocktail reception and awards ceremony, it was Golf del Sur’s commitment to renovating the course. The club is continuing its master plan to maintain the organization of sporting events for all the island’s fans, while maintaining high-quality event planning and attention to detail for the players.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the participants and the winners. He also emphasized that the goal was to hold an important competition with amateur players from all over the island, and that a wonderful atmosphere would be created for everyone.
All participants received a welcome gift, and the awards ceremony took place with a raffle for all players.
Another event that impressed fans with its attention to detail and course preparation at the highest level.
Competition undoubtedly always makes us better.
The next event will focus on the island’s young talents on September 6th.
