Aaron Galindo, owner and project manager, explains the phases of the Master Plan in detail.

Golf del Sur – Progress of the Renovation Master Plan

After completing phases I and II of the course formerly known as the Links, Golf del Sur is now beginning the same work on its former North Course. These first two phases have already seen the opening of five tees per hole, as well as a significant landscaping improvement that has allowed for the restoration of a more native and open environment.

Golf del Sur continues to focus on the course’s sustainability from an environmental perspective. Therefore, Phase I of the new Master Plan includes an ambitious sustainability plan that includes the following actions:

– Use of native species with low water consumption.
– Use of sand and stone from the municipality’s own quarries.
– Reuse of pruning waste to generate mulch (penalty areas).
– Reduction of irrigation areas.
– Renewal of the machinery fleet, currently one of the most modern in the Canary Islands.
– Irrigation with 100% reclaimed water from the metropolitan area. This not only promotes responsible consumption but also contributes financially to the public coffers managing the supply, thus avoiding the discharge of treated water into the sea.
– Almost total reduction in the use of chemical pest control products, thanks to the use of native species that are more resistant than the invasive ones previously present.
– The pruning and species control plan is carried out according to the catalog prepared by the Government of the Canary Islands (Redexos): https://www3.gobiernodecanarias.org/cptss/sostenibilidad/biodiversidad/redexos/

In addition, this first phase includes the construction of new paths, which:
– Clearly delineate each hole, meeting the standards of modern courses.
– Improve the condition of the fairways, preventing compaction caused by heavy buggy traffic.
– Completely improve the unsightly ruts between paths and fairways.
– Significantly reduce interaction between machinery and players.
– 100% eliminate breakdowns and accidents resulting from unrestricted buggy traffic on the course where work has already been completed.

On February 26th, architect Gonzalo Millán Adaro, from the construction and design firm Target Golf Engineers, visited the property. Together with the owners, management, head greenkeeper, and the construction company, the details of the new driving range were reviewed, as well as the projects to be undertaken in the coming months.

The new Golf del Sur course will be:

– Challenging, yet suitable for players of all levels.
– In harmony with the surrounding natural landscape.
– Designed to preserve local ecosystems.
– Optimized for water management and long-term sustainability.

Special attention is also being paid to the practice areas (driving range, putting greens), the golf academy, and other complementary services that will enhance the experience for players and visitors.

Importance of the Master Plan

A golf master plan is a detailed, strategic plan that defines the long-term design, development, and management of a golf course, encompassing both aesthetic and functional aspects. It is an essential tool for creating new courses or improving and modernizing existing ones.

These changes will not only improve the quality and functionality of the course, but will also ensure its relevance and sustainability over time.

Since March, the modifications contemplated in the Master Plan have been actively underway on holes 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the former North Course. The main changes made so far are:

1. Complete removal of palm trees from the interior of the course.
2. Expansion of the rough areas, which now extend to the paths.
3. Construction of new paths, allowing for faster, smoother, and safer circulation within the course.
4. Start of construction of new tees and hazard areas, specially designed to control ball landings, preventing crossings between fairways and improving the playability and safety of the course.

The changes to the old North Course will be much more radical than those made to the previous Links course. The Master Plan includes a strong commitment to the visual and landscape integration of the San Blas Reserve within the course. For this reason, much more intensive invasive species control measures have been approved than those previously applied to the Links course.

The work will also include substantial modifications to the layout of some fairways, changing the par on two holes, and constructing a large lake that will be open to players of all levels. With these projects, the goal is to make this course one of the most impressive, challenging, and fun golf courses in the Canary Islands.

Also during the month of May, work will begin on Phase 3 of the recently approved Master Plan for the old Links course. This phase will involve the construction of 15 new white sand bunkers, initially covering five holes. These carefully designed new bunkers will impress our players and provide a spectacular view of the entire course.

At the same time, a series of modifications will be made to the layout of holes 6 and 7, with the aim of transforming their playability. These changes reflect the creative vision of our designer, who seeks to renew the strategic challenge of the course and enrich the playing experience.

During the month of August, the landscaping work on the old Links course is planned to be completed, with the goal of completing this stage of the course. This phase will see the completion of stone, sand, and the complete clearing of non-native vegetation, thus consolidating the course’s new landscape style.

To achieve this milestone, it will be essential to complete the teeing area of holes 6, 7, and 9. Once these improvements are completed, the first nine holes of the course will be virtually finished in terms of landscaping, with only the water areas remaining. Even so, players will already be able to clearly perceive and experience the new identity of the course we are building with this ambitious Master Plan.

Finally, regarding the works planned for this year aimed at continuing to promote the project’s efficiency and sustainability, the installation of a new 300-kilowatt photovoltaic plant with a battery storage system has been approved—and its start date, expected no later than August, is awaiting confirmation. With this infrastructure, the course will be virtually energy self-sufficient, allowing us to successfully take on new projects such as lighting the Driving Range or irrigation with pumps at night.

Thanks to this investment, a 97% savings on the monthly electricity bill is expected, representing a crucial step toward the field’s self-sustainability.

We will continue working with the same enthusiasm and commitment to advance the next stages of the Master Plan, whose vision will culminate in a comprehensive renovation project unprecedented in the Canary Islands, and with which we aspire to position Golf del Sur at the forefront of European golf.
