Inaugurated in 1987 with a professional tournament, Golf del Sur has since established itself as one of the most iconic golf courses in the Canary Islands and a regular host of top-level international competitions.
Originally designed by Pepe Gancedo and redesigned in 2005 by Manuel Piñero, Golf del Sur today offers an 18-hole championship layout, with wide fairways, generous greens and natural features that make every round unique.
Golf del Sur is a desert-style course with links-inspired details, a par 72 layout designed to challenge experienced golfers while remaining enjoyable for all levels of play. Located alongside the San Blas Nature Reserve and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, several holes run along the dramatic San Blas ravine, making every shot an authentic and unforgettable experience. Unlike many resort-style courses, we are a truly authentic, different, and deeply Canarian golf course, where the trade winds add character and a unique challenge to every round.
In 2024 we embarked on an ambitious Master Plan to transform Golf del Sur into an international benchmark for course design, sustainability, and playing experience. The project, led by Manuel Piñero and Target Ingenieros, aims to restore the natural environment and integrate the course into the San Blas Nature Reserve. Highlights include state-of-the-art Durabunker bunkers with striking white sand; new Bermuda teeing grounds that are level, firm and offer a wide variety of distances to suit all players; and spectacular new greens that will become the signature feature of this project. The plan also includes a new irrigation system, a fully renovated practice area, renewable energy integration, and sustainable landscaping with native species. This Master Plan represents a new era for Golf del Sur, combining history with innovation and excellence.
In its early years, the course hosted the Tenerife Open on the PGA European Volvo Tour (1989, 1992, 1993 and 1994), with victories by José María Olazábal, David Gilford and Mark James. In 1995, it was the stage for the prestigious Shell Wonderful World of Golf, an unforgettable match between Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson. In 1999, Golf del Sur made history with two long-drive world records set by Karl Woodward, the longest at 408 yards. In 2002, the course gained international attention again with the Tenerife Ladies Open on the LPGA European Evian Tour, won by Raquel Carriedo, and repeated in 2007 with Nikki Garrett’s victory.
Since 2025, Golf del Sur has hosted the Summer Tournament, an innovative event inspired by the spirit of LIV Golf. This tournament has become a true success story in terms of participation, sponsorship, and player experience. Known for its vibrant atmosphere, unique format and festive spirit, it represents a turning point that sets us apart and strengthens Golf del Sur as a dynamic club in constant evolution.
